Your Legal Rights

 Has Satan Stolen Your Birthright?

Let’s begin with a few key verses:

-I John 3: 8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

-II Corinthians 4: 4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

-Notice that it is god with a small “g”.

-James 4: 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

--This sentence is found only once in the whole Bible, and only in the New Testament.

It is important to note that these verses are all New Testament verses.  So you say, what exactly is the significance of that statement?  Well, let’s take a closer look at all of this.

1. When the scripture says that a major purpose for Jesus being on this earth was to destroy “the works of the devil”, it appears evident that the devil was having a hay day on the earth before Jesus showed up.
2. Only after Jesus is on the earth does it tell us that we can “resist the devil”; and on top of that, “he will flee from you!”
3. And aren’t you curious as to when and how the devil became “the god of this world?”

Well, here’s what happened:

-It says in Genesis 1: 26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

-In Gen 1: 28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

So, it appears that Adam was meant to be the “god of this world”.  Adam was given dominion, and his offspring would have inherited the right to continue the process of mankind multiplying, replenishing, and subduing the earth.  But it is obvious that a shift of some sort had taken place somewhere along the line.

Adam and Eve made a fatal mistake early on.  Let’s take a closer look at what James says:

-James 4: 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

In order to be able to resist the devil, one must submit themselves to God.  Therein lays Adam’s fatal error.  When he went against God’s one command not to eat of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, he submitted to the devil instead of his Father God.

It was akin to what Esau did when he traded his birthright to Jacob for a pot of soup.  Then Jacob deceived his own father to take Esau’s birthright for himself. This story is found in Genesis 25:29-34.  So, Eve was deceived and Adam disobeyed, which led them to giving (turning over) their birthright for the earth to Satan.

Just as with Adam, when a person is disobedient they are giving Satan legal right to attack and deceive them.  A wise Christian is quick to repent for any disobedient act, and therefore can successfully stand against “the wiles (trickery, guile, or deceit) of the devil”.  Non-believers and Christians that do not take the devil seriously are not even aware that they have opened a door for the enemy to enter.

God intended for mankind to inherit the earth; and the right to have dominion over it.  As Charles Capps reiterates in one of his books, that we were born here—so we have legal citizenship; but Satan was no born here—rather, he was cast out of heaven and thrown down here.  He is not a citizen of this earth, but an imposter claiming to have legal rights.

God had a plan for such a time as this.  He sent His Son to be born of a woman on this earth.  Therefore Jesus, who is sometimes referred to as a second Adam, had a legal birthright as a man born on this earth.  Differently than the first Adam, He “walked in obedience” to His Heavenly Father and knew His authority over the devil very well.  He became our model for living a victorious life, and demonstrated for us how to take authority over demonic forces.

As we now see in scripture, Jesus is back in Heaven sitting as our advocate at the right hand of the Father.  When He went to be with the Father He said He would send the Holy Spirit as our teacher and guide to help us in our walk on the earth.  I am going to make a somewhat shocking but true statement at this point:

Jesus has done all He is going to do for You!

If you are waiting for God or Jesus to pull you out of your trouble, you are misguided.  God has already sent His Son to die for you, and Jesus’ went to the cross for your “salvation”.  The Greek word for salvation is “sozo”.  Sozo means saved, delivered, healed, preserved, and made whole.  That has already been done—past tense!  Not will be done, not might be done, but has been done.  All you have to do at this point is receive it as a free gift, and then walk in the faith that God’s word for you is true.  Most people just can’t take God’s Word for it.

Those who have learned that God’s word is good, and walk in that truth, have great confidence that they can stand against demonic forces—because they have God’s word on it.  So the plan for the born again believer is to walk in obedience and act on your birthright—tell the imposter that he has nor rights in your house.

Well, that was another path I took to help you see your authority, but let’s get back to where I was originally going with this.

When two people have a question over who has legal right to a piece of property, they get an attorney to research the truth and take it before a judge.  Sounds like a good idea to me…you with me?

We know who our advocate (attorney) is, do we not?  Jesus is our advocate for us with the judge (Father God).  Jesus goes to the Father for us.  Have you ever felt like you were “set up”?  Have you ever felt like you had no chance because you were competing with someone who had inside information and a relationship with the person that would be making the final decision?  Why even try, right?

Well, how do you think Satan feels right this minute—when he knows what I am about to tell you?  He is shaking in his boots…that’s what!  Here’s why.

Let’s go ask Jesus (our advocate), who has the legal right to this earth.  He has already been to the Judge and clarified the deal!  Boy, does He have a deal for you!!  Here is what Jesus says on the authority of our Father—the King of The Universe no less.

1. The meek will inherit the earth.

-Mathew 5: 5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

2. He will give them power and authority over all devils.

-Luke 9: 1 Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.

3. The devil is a defeated foe.

-Colossians 2: 14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; 15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

The first requirement for regaining your legal rights from the devil is to submit yourself to God.  Another word for “meek” is “humble”.  It takes a humble attitude to submit to God—the Bible calls it being “Born Again” and becoming part of the family of God.  As in the Hatfields and McCoys, you have to pick the best family and side to be on.

Secondly, you must have faith and believe that the devil was defeated at The Cross, and that You have been given power and authority over demonic forces.  You win, Satan loses.
